| Professor Robin Higgs' philosophy has always been to deliver
skilled orthopaedic treatment with kindness and understanding. Robin is
an Orthopaedic Consultant and Orthopaedic Engineer. He has contributed
to the advancement of prosthetic design, pioneered the clinical use of
ceramic biomaterials and introduced cement-free total joint replacement
in Australia. He is the sole designer of a Modular Shoulder Prosthesis
and was the recipient of the prestigious Pauwel's Medal for Orthopaedics.
He holds academic appointments in the Faculty of Medicine at the University
of Sydney, and in the Faculty of Science at The University of Technology,
Sydney. He is a former Airborne Forces Army Officer, Grade Cricket Player,
Canoeist, Parachutist, Medical Officer to International Cricket Teams
and youth soccer coach. |

| Professor Robin Higgs began his medical career in London at St Bartholomews Hospital. He has served in the Royal Army Medical Corps, commanding a Parachute Field Surgical Unit, and he has served with Commonwealth Forces in Malaysia before commencing Orthopaedic Training in London and Sydney. | |

| Orthopaedic training was undertaken with the Australian Orthopaedic Association. Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and of Australia and New Zealand have been achieved and the Professor is also a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association. Robin is also a Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine and a Member of The Australian Academy of Forensic Science. | |||

Professor Higgs' major orthopaedic appointment was with the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Concord RGH. He has been Director of Orthopaedic Surgery and Executive Director of Surgery at that hospital. |

In 1977 Professor Higgs was Medical Director of the Wales Rescue (SLSA) Helicopter Service. One of the exciting rescues Professor Higgs has taken part in was featured in the Melbourne Age newspaper. He is seen jumping from the helicopter into the Tasman Sea to provide aid to a burning yacht during the 1977 Sydney to Hobart yacht race. |

Professor Higgs' main interest and experience is in MAJOR JOINT REPLACEMENT
SURGERY. This interest follows from the many years at Concord Repatriation
General Hospital where the patient base was largely from the Veteran
community - the age group most needing this type of surgery. During
this time Professor Higgs introduced the (now routine) use of ceramic
materials and cement-free implant fixation. This led to his work with
Young Adult Joint Reconstruction.

In 1993 Robin was appointed as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney, and in 2001 he was appointed Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Science at The University of Technology, Sydney. The contributions to Orthopaedic Engineering have been many. There has been involvement with the design of three Total Hip Prostheses, the improvement of articulating materials and the design of an artificial shoulder. He is the sole designer of a Modular Prosthetic Shoulder which has been available world wide. His great interest remains Hip, Knee & Shoulder Replacement Surgery. |

Professor Higgs has been awarded three postgraduate medals. These have included the prestigious Pauwels medal - awarded by the German Orthopaedic Society for contributions to World Orthopaedic Research in general and for contribution to the understanding of the Biomechanics of the Hip Joint in particular. In 1996 Professor Higgs was also appointed Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney. Academic appointments in two Faculties of the same University is a rarely achieved honour. |

| Professor Higgs has taught and performed surgery in Europe and Asia. He has demonstrated surgical procedures in 7 countries. He has served on the Scientific Board of Trustees of the AFOR Foundation in Switzerland. This Swiss Government and Industry supported organization is committed to International Orthopaedic Research and Education. He has advised the Austrian Government and was a member of the Scientific Committee tasked with the evaluation of Austrian (K-Plus) research centres. | |||||
|
The Professor regularly contributes to the scientific literature and to learned societies. He has published 45 papers and chapters, and he has presented 142 papers at National and International meetings. He has written three operative technique brochures and produced two instructional videos.
